The Special Rapporteurs for Freedom of Expression, Human Rights Defenders and Freedom of Assembly and the Vice-president of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention sent a communication to the Government of Madagascar. The communication was concerning information received regarding acts of harassment, criminal prosecution and detention of human rights defenders, including whistleblowers and election observers, in the period before and after the presidential elections of November 2023.
The Special Procedures drew attention to the information received concerning the detention of the human rights defender, Ms. Marie Nathassa Razafiarisoa, the sentencing of the human rights defender, Mr. Thomas Razafindremaka, to two years in prison, as well as acts of harassment against members of the SAFIDY observatory, including electoral observer and human rights defender Mr. Sorotombake Mbola.
